About Cognitive Processing Therapy Intensives

CPT Intensive Therapy is a powerful way to accelerate the healing process from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It would typically take a 1-hour session per week, for 3-months, to complete CPT. With an intensive format, you would set aside 1-hour of therapy per day, for 12-days. This helps people go deeper, and feel better faster.

How CPT Intensives Work

Prior to the therapy Intensive, we meet for a pre-intensive to decide on your therapy goals. We'll look at your life now - who supports you, what stresses you out, how you cope when things get hard, as well as what your goals are, and where you feel stuck. We will identify the trauma(s) you would like relief from. In CPT, we work on two big goals: 1) help you understand and change unhelpful thoughts that cause you distress. 2) Build resilience so you handle tough situations in the future, with confidence and a positive outlook. We meet these goals by using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques like asking you questions, having dialogues, and written exercises. These help break down negative beliefs about yourself and the world, and specifically on the topics of safety, trust, power/control, esteem, and intimacy.

Is a CPT Intensive Right for You?

CPT Intensives are designed for individuals who are ready to engage in deep therapeutic work and are tired of merely surviving and avoiding their pain. If you have painful memories and experiences that continue to impact your daily life, CPT Intensives can provide the relief and transformation you seek.

Perhaps you have already attended weekly or bi-weekly therapy sessions and now desire a more profound and accelerated healing experience. Or maybe you are facing significant life changes, such as the arrival of a new baby, a move, marriage, or a new job, and need a quicker resolution to your trauma-related challenges. Regardless of your specific situation, CPT Intensives offer a focused and time-efficient approach to your healing journey.

Cognitive Processing Therapy Intensives work better for individuals with ADHD and substance use because sustained attention, commitment, and sobriety is easier in 12-days than 3-months.

FAQs Answered

  • A: Cognitive Processing Therapy is an evidence-based treatment that has been around since the 80’s. I began in the VA to treat PTSD in veterans. I has since been adjusted to treat all forms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

CPT is rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CPT is a very structured form of CBT that includes 12-sessions that are focused around what you believe to be the cause of your trauma(s), as well as what you have come to believe about yourself and the world as a result of your trauma(s). Some examples of common beliefs that come out of trauma are as follows:

    “The world is unsafe”

    “I can’t trust anyone”

“I can’t trust myself to make good decisions.”

“If I had xyz, then it wouldn’t have happened.”

Once you and the therapist have identified the beliefs that are causing you distress, the therapist helps you work through them, stopping them from causing you pain.

  • A: You will be charged a non-refundable booking deposit at the time of scheduling. This will be half of the cost of the program.

The remaining balance is charged at the first session.

The reason I charge a booking deposit is because I typically only see clients Wed-Fri. With a 12-day intensive I am pre-scheduling and blocking my calendar for an hour each day for 12 consecutive days. This is a commitment for both you, and me.

  • A: Some insurance plans will reimburse a portion of the cost of each session, typically PPO (not HMO) insurances. Please know that the insurance company requires a diagnosis code as a reason for treatment. If you have a PPO insurance plan, I am happy to provide you a superbill to submit through Thrizer.

  • A: Cognitive Processing Therapy Intensives give you the results you would get from 3-months of traditional CPT therapy, in a much shorter time. They are great for people who have ADHD, big life changes coming up, as well as those who are better able to set aside more time at once, rather than commit to weekly therapy for 12-weeks. I have also found them helpful for individuals with substance abuse who have difficulty staying sober for 7-days at a time.

  • A: A mix of In person at my office Wed-Friday in Grand Rapids, MI, and online all other days.

We can also complete the program over telehealth throughout Michigan and Florida. For online sessions, you will need access to a printer in order to print out worksheets for sessions.

Accommodations can be made for 100% in-person sessions for an additional 1x fee of $180
